Security Analyst, Dr. Adam Bonaa has called for an independent investigation into the death of an alleged robbery suspect, Albert Donkor while in police custody.
He said this should be apart from what the Ghana Police Service will do in this regard.
“I think that even though the Police would do their own investigations, let’s have an independent probe into this particular matter," he suggested.
Dr. Bonaa also said the Bono East Regional Security Council and Police Service must take urgent steps to find a solution to the matter before more lives are lost.
Speaking on Top Story, Tuesday, shortly after the youth went on rampage and clashed with the Police over the alleged killing of the suspect, he noted that REGSEC together with the Municipal Chief Executive should at the moment put in measures to ensure peace and security for the people of Nkoranza.
“The Regional Minister and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and REGSEC it is incumbent on them to request the Interior Minister to possibly place some form of a curfew to get everybody back into their homes or else you get arrested…At the moment we need to look for peace and security for the people of Nkoranza,” he said.
Dr. Adam Bonaa stressed that failure to ensure there is security and peace in Nkoranza town at the moment could result in more lives being lost and properties destroyed.
“If we don’t do that and we continue to lament we would get up and we will hear four people are dead or two people are dead like it happened in Ejura. This is how Ejura started panning out and before we could say jack, more people had been injured and people had been killed,” he added.
He urged the Bono East Regional Minister and the MCE to find an immediate solution to the happenings in the town.
On Tuesday, the youth of Nkoranza in the Bono East Region went on rampage as they attacked the Municipal Police headquarters demanding justice for Albert Donkor, a 28-year-old trader who was allegedly killed while in Police custody.
They freed six other suspects picked up by the Police as armed robbers together with the deceased.
According to JoyNews’ Ohemeng Tawiah, there was total chaos at the Police Station as the youth protested the tagging and subsequent killing of the deceased.
They said the deceased is not an armed robber, demanding that those who killed him in custody must answer.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Akuffo-Dampare has ordered the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the death of Albert Donkor.
In a press statement by the Police on Tuesday, Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Kwasi Ofori said, the IGP “spoke with the family [of the deceased] on the telephone and has constituted a high-powered delegation led by COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Director-General/Administration to visit Nkoranza tomorrow [Wednesday, for further engagement with all stakeholders.”
The Police have urged the public to avoid unfounded speculations which have the potential to prejudice the outcome of the investigation.
