Heads of Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region say they are worried about increasing false alarm about Covid-19 infection in schools.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Schools (CHASS) says the development scares students and takes a toll on academic work.
Ashanti Regional President, Rev. Fr Stephen Owusu Sekyere tells 'Kro yi mu Nsem' on Nhyira FM running of the school is becoming difficult.
He cited Opoku Ware School for instance where 29 students are alleged to tested positive, less than 24-hours after final year students had returned.
Rev Owusu Sekyere, head of the school, says many students have been asking to be sent home.
“On 22nd June, 2020, the same day students resumed, I was shocked to hear Opoku Ware had recorded 29 Covid-19 cases by 9 p.m. I was shocked to see pictures to that effect. You will then see parents besieging the campuses to withdraw their wards’’, he lamented.
Reverend Owusu Sekyere added, "If the headmaster is not strong, with exceptional managerial qualities, then it would turn into something else.
"The students are scared and living in fear. They complain of loss of taste, smell and other conditions. In short, it is an indication that they want to go home."
He said government, through the Education Ministry and old students associations have supported schools with Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), but there is little public contribution.
Rev Owusu Sekyere blames spread of falsehood, especially, by the media without cross-checking information before going public.
"The problem comes back to the headmaster and school authorities. The students are living in fear since we are not in normal times.
"I will plead with everybody to cross-check information before you disseminate," Rev Owusu Sekyere appealed.
