Schalke return to winning ways in Bundesliga Round-Up

Schalke rebounded from last week's 5-0 loss to Kaiserslautern with a superb team performance in a 2-0 victory against rivals Bayern Munich. The match was in every sense a tale of two halves, with the visitors dominating the opening 45 minutes and Schalke the better side after the break. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was world class in the Schalke goal, and helped his side weather the early storm. The match live on Multi TV channels Joy Sports and Adom TV saw Schalke earned a shock opener through Jose Manuel Jurado after a phenomenal solo effort by Raul. After collecting a long ball, the 33-year old was felled by Breno, but got to his feet and ran goalward. The Spaniard then collided with Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and teammate Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but the ball trickled across the face of goal and to Jurado, who fired in off the right post. Nine minutes after the opener, Benedikt Hoewedes doubled the hosts advantage with a tap-in after his initial header deflected off the inside of the right post. Bayern were by far the more dangerous side in the opening 45 minutes, but with a little help from the woodwork, Neuer was absolutely unbeatable. When Toni Kroos' curling effort on 33 minutes was bound for the top-left corner, the Germany #1 produced a majestic save. Six minutes later, Neuer again denied Kroos by quickly running off his line to block when his international teammate was through on goal. Neuer was unable to stop every shot that came his way; the goalkeeper was helpless as Bastian Schweinsteiger fired on 39 minutes, but the Bayern man's shot rebounded off the woodwork. Earlier in the game, Schweinsteiger took a volley that was also tipped wide. Led by wingers Franck Ribery and Thomas Mueller, the visitors looked very lively on the counterattack, but a combination of poor execution and outstanding individual defending by Schalke pair Benedikt Hoewedes and Christoph Metzelder helped preserve a clean sheet through the opening 45 minutes. Ribery had a pair of efforts miss narrowly wide, and Mario Gomez had another miss the target after being well set up by Ribery. Schalke remain 15th following tonight's match, but have drawn to within a point of St Pauli, Wolfsburg, and Kaiserslautern. Bayern, meanwhile, sink from fifth to seventh in the Bundesliga standings. Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-2 Hannover For the third consecutive week, Gladbach had an early lead reversed en route to a loss. American midfielder Michael Bradley opened the scoring with a fine free kick in the 16th minute, but Raul Bobadilla was foolishly sent off before the break. Hannover's numerical advantage in personnel translated to success for the visitors, who took three points thanks to quick-fire goals from Mike Hanke (72') and Didier Ya Konan (74'). A poor result for Bradley and Glabdbach in their quest to stay out of the relegation fight, but a big win for Steve Cherundolo and DaMarcus Beasley's Hannover who are looking for a spot in Europe. Wolfsburg 0-0 Werder Bremen Wolfsburg and Bremen played to a surprise stalemate following last year's six-goal thriller. Captains Torsten Frings and Edin Dzeko missed late penalties in rapid succession, and such events were characteristic of a match in which both sides forget to find their form in attack Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 Mainz Frankfurt earned a deserved victory over Mainz thanks to a late penalty from Theofanis Gekas. Marco Russ volleyed in an emphatic finish on 35 minutes to hand the hosts the lead, but Andre Schuerrle leveled against the run of play after Halil Altintop conceded a silly penalty. Frankfurt looked better in the second half, and got their three points through Gekas after Bundesliga debutant Jan Kirchhoff was somewhat controversially penalized for a hand ball. Stuttgart 1-1 Hoffenheim Hoffenheim played with just ten men for 49 minutes, but managed to avoid having their early lead turn into a defeat. Sejad Salihovic fired in the opener on 11 minutes, but Martin Harnik drew the hosts level in the 34th. After Isaac Vorsah was dismissed in the 41st minute, Hoffenheim were against the ropes, but the village side dug deep and managed to preserve their point despite a second half siege upon their goal. Freiburg 1-0 Hamburg Freiburg took three points against an injury-hit and largely experimental Hamburg side. Two minutes into the game, Papiss Cisse tapped in the opener after his initial effort rebounded off the post. The visitors dominated possession, but struggled to create opportunities on goal, and slumped to a disappointing defeat. Source:Goal.com
