The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has initiated legal action against Asaase Radio and ABC News for defamation following a story on his purported trip to Miami.
The lawsuit stems from a viral video alleging that Mr. Gyamfi and his wife took a lavish trip to Miami, purportedly funded by the party. Mr. Gyamfi vehemently denies these claims, dismissing them as “baseless and senseless.”
He has thus filed for damages amounting to GH¢10 million.
In his statement, Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that the accusations are entirely false and malicious, lacking any factual basis. He asserts that the defendants acted recklessly, disregarding the truth, with the apparent intention of damaging his reputation and character.
According to Mr. Gyamfi, he is determined to seek redress and clear his name from what he perceives as deliberate efforts to defame him.
He maintains that the allegations have caused significant harm to his personal and professional standing.
“Plaintiff avers that he has never been to the said Betsy Hotel in Miami, Florida in the United States of America and has never paid or misappropriated US$3000 a day on hotel accommodation or US$42,000 on hotel accommodation over a two-week period from monies allocated to him by his party, as falsely claimed by the Defendants.”
He is also petitioning the court to compel ABC News and Asaase Radio to issue an unreserved apology through their respective platforms.
Additionally, he seeks a public apology to be published prominently on the front page of the Daily Graphic newspaper for three consecutive days.
He is also demanding, “A retraction and an unqualified apology by each of the Defendants to Plaintiff using the same medium they used in publishing the defamatory statements complained of.”
