National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party Sammy Awuku has criticised the flouting of social distancing protocols at the just ended primaries.

According to him, although there were measures put in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus, there were cases of defiance by some people who were laden with emotion.

“The party provided the PPEs, veronica buckets and hand sanitisers to help protect our delegates but there is a human element. Traditionally it is difficult to change but when progress demands change, you will change,” he said

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he cautioned party members and supporters to be extra conscious in their interactions at political events.

He stated that, it may take time for people to fully adapt to physical distancing as because activities like hugging and shaking hands are imbibed lifestyle habits.

However, he promised that his outfit will see to see to the strict enforcement of these measures in future.

“Some of the images we saw are worrying and we are going to take steps to ensure that nobody uses the name of the party to flout any of these rules.”

“We are going to be strong on these matters. We will not shield anybody who has gone contrary to these laws," he told host of Joy SMS, Kojo Yankson.

Some pictures from reportage of the recent NPP primary election showed delegates and supporters hugging and shaking hands.

This is contrary to the government's directive of practicing social distancing to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading Covid-19.

This was followed by heavy criticism on social media for days.
