Packaged water producers say they have stayed out of the raging controversy over the imposition of the 20 per cent ad valorem tax on their products because they believe in the ultimate objective of the tax.
At a closed-door meeting held Thursday to approve a new price inclusive of the tax, the members said they would go ahead to implement the tax because the consuming public which is most likely to be affected appears not so worried.
The association’s president, Magnus Nunoo, says the end users are likely to be the bearers of the additional costs.
Mr. Nunoo is meanwhile hopeful the Finance Ministry will resolve the issues that are impeding the implementation of the tax.
“The consumer is the one who is paying, whether you like it or not,” he said.
Though the producers have proposed a new price of GHp7 per sachet to take effect from next month, they concede retailers may use the excuse of unavailability of change to sell at GHp10.
