Despite reaching the World Cup semi-finals, the heartbreak of bowing out of the tournament was all too much for Argentina coach Daniel Hourcade who was seen wiping away tears after his side's 29-15 loss to the Wallabies on Sunday.

Hourcade was overwhelmed with emotion as he sat with his head in his hands, unable to come to terms with just how close his side was to a maiden World Cup final.

He was all too aware of the magnitude of the match, and would have backed his troops to conjure a surprise victory over the Australians, but it wasn't to be in the end as three tries to Adam Ashley Cooper sunk the South American nation's hopes for the second time in a World Cup semi-final.

Despite the loss, Hourcade praised the efforts of his players and said his focus was now on the third-place playoff against South Africa.
"I was hurting for the players, not myself," said Hourcade in a post-match interview.

"They gave everything they had and I am very proud of them. They never gave up, always looking to score a try. I am not sure if I cried but it was emotional. I feel a huge pain but it is not over for us. To finish third in the World Cup would mean a lot to us."

Hourcade wasn't the only Argentinian feeling a little blue, with players and even football great Diego Maradona - who seen downing a pint in the crowd during the game - seen to be rather emotional after the 14-point defeat.

Even before the game, the national anthem almost had the Pumas in tears, such was the occasion of the game they were about to play in.
