Rotary Clubs in Ghana have stepped in to ease the burden of Appiatse residents following an explosion there last month which almost wiped out the community.
The Clubs donated educational materials to ensure that the affected children return to the classrooms.
Items donated include English, Mathematics and Science textbooks, Note 1 and 3 exercise books, uniforms and school bags. Others are pens, pencils, rulers, erasers and mathematical sets.
The Appiatse disaster on January 20, has brought the typical Ghanaian compassion and generosity to the fore.
Scores of individuals and institutions have trooped in to donate assorted items to support the victims and survivors of the explosion.
Truckloads of food items, clothes and building materials have been received according to officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
One group of victims whose plight has not received much attention is the school children of Appiatse.
It is estimated that about 197 children of basic school age were directly affected by the incident. The collapse of their homes led to the loss of their school uniforms, books, bags and other supplies.
Stepping in to ease their burden, the Rotary Clubs visited the community.
The items, which cost about ¢30,000, were sponsored through voluntary donations by Rotary Club members across the country.
President Nominee of the Rotary Club of Tarkwa, Abdel Razak Yakubu, handed the items over to the children on behalf of Rotarians in Ghana.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the children, the Municipal Chief Executive Officer of the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly, Dr Isaac Dasmani, expressed gratitude to Rotary Clubs in Ghana for the kind gesture.
