Five armed robbers Monday stormed a forex bureau at New Achimota, near the ABC Junction in Accra grabbing over GH¢22,140 (¢220.14 million) and went on a shooting spree, terrifying motorists and residents in the area.
As they tried to escape, they eventually realised that the old Mitsubishi Gallant saloon car with the fake registration number GT 282 F, which they used in the 'operation', could not start.
But amidst a volley of warning shots, the gunmen stopped vehicles "plying the road, hijacked a taxi cab from its drive and sped away with it at a terrific speed, leaving behind their disabled Mitsubishi Gallant.
A few minutes earlier, the robbers had shot their way into the forex bureau, held the workers hostage and collected every valuable item, including mobile phones into a sack and ordered everyone to lie down before bolting with the cash.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, an attendant at the forex bureau said all the five armed robbers spoke with Nigerian accent when they entered the bureau and wielded locally made pistols.
He said one of them was a well-known Nigerian customer of the forex bureau, who had apparently surveyed their activities for a very long time.
Meanwhile, a complaint has been lodged with the Mile 7 Police Station at Achimota.
