After a long wait, Ghana's IBF lightweight contender Richard Commey will have a shot at the main world title. The undefeated boxer is currently the main contender in the IBF rankings and is scheduled to face American Robert Easter Jnr who boasts of a clean record of 17-0.
The IBF title became vacant after then champion Rances Barthelemy , expressed lack of interest to stage a third title defence against Richard Commey.
At a news Conference at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra earlier today, Commey said he was excited about the landing the opportunity he has been working for all these years.
"My team and I have been through and set our sight on the ultimate from day one. I want to do this for my nation and write my name in boxing history," he said after shedding tears briefly.
"This is an amazing feeling. My manager met me in Ghana in 2010 and saw great potential in me and decided to work with me. Today we have finally landed the big opportunity. Glory be to God. I want to assure all gathered here that I will never let this opportunity slip by," a confident Commey told the news conference.
Michael Amoo Bediako, manager for Commey, who confirmed the world title fight said this has always been his team's ambition. Amoo Bediako through his outfit Street Wise Management and the Promoters, Team Sauerland will work out the fine details of staging the big bout in Ghana.
"As a team, we appreciate that working on this will be tough but we are committed to ensuring that we win the opportunity to put together this fight," he told the news conference.
According to Amoo Bediako, Commey's Promoters, Sauerland, are working hard to stage the bout in Ghana, which hasn't seen the a major world title bout in years.
"We have started off the process and have been given the deadline of July 6 to come to an agreement failing which the bout will be subjected to a purse bid. We are very positive about the eventual outcome of this and we know we ".
He also made time to pay tribute to the legendary Muhammad Ali who will be buried on Friday.
"This great legend visited Ghana in 1964 and made black people proud as the most famous man on the planet. Years on we are inspired by his example because he brought us respect in parts of the world where black people will regularly be looked down upon. We will work hard to honour Mouhammad Ali's memory by bringing that world title fight here to Ghana. We will show the world what 'The Greatest' taught us"
Commey, also a former Commonwealth champion, is undefeated in 24 fights and is currently the number 3 contender in the latest IBF rankings.
The 29-year-old has received big recognition in his home country for his achievements so far. He received the professional boxer of the year award for a second time running at the Spots Writer's Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards held on June 4.
Promoter Wilfried Sauerland who joined the news conference via skype, gave another assurance about working on staging the bout in Ghana.
"We are putting 110% effort into this and we hope to make it happen. Commey is a great talent and we are excited about working with him. We want to ensure that the dream of title glory happens," he said.
Sauerland promotes a list of great boxers including Arthur Abraham and Jurgen Braehmer.
The 29-year old boxer started off as a kick boxer and decided to switch to boxing after 2010. He started off his professional career in 2011 with a TKO over Baba Nsor in Accra. He has since worked with trainer Larwrence Carl Lokko (pictured above) a.k.a. Nii Carl, who runs the Bronx Boxing Gym in Accra.
Commey who currently holds the IBF international title, has also been nominated for the Ghana edition of the EMY (Exclusive Men of the Year) Africa Awards as Sports Personality of the Year.
He is nominated alongside Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan, Ghana and Swansea forward Andre Ayew, Ghana/Leicester City defender basketball promoter/broadcaster Yaw Sakyi, and baseball player Albert Frimpong.
