The Head of Rheumatology at the University of Ghana Medical School, Dr Dzifa Dey, has shed light on the hidden challenges faced by persons living with lupus on Joy FM's 'Ultimate Health Show.'

According to the senior lecturer, lupus is more prevalent in women, typically with a 1:19 ratio.

However, hormone estrogen may trigger lupus in women, and avoiding estrogen-rich foods can help prevent flares.

Lupus is a systemic, chronic autoimmune disease that can affect various organs in the body, making it difficult to diagnose.

She underscored the challenges of diagnosing lupus due to its diverse manifestations and the lack of a specific blood test.

Dr Dzifa Dey explained that lupus, though not directly contagious, can affect families through a genetic predisposition combined with environmental triggers.

"These triggers, ranging from infections to other factors, can activate the condition. While genetics may play a role, it's not a direct inheritance, and each person's genetic makeup interacts with their environment to determine the manifestation of conditions like lupus," she said.

The rheumatologist highlighted the anxiety and instability that patients with lupus often face.

"Even during periods of remission, vigilance through regular check-ups and lab tests is essential. Remission, where symptoms are minimal, is achievable but requires ongoing attention," she stated.

According to her, psychological distress is common among lupus patients, as the uncertainty of their condition's stability weighs heavily on their minds.

She said counselling is crucial in reassuring patients and emphasised the importance of proper management stating, "With effective care and support, individuals can live with lupus for decades."

However, Dr Dey stated that "neglecting regular check-ups can lead to complications, such as kidney issues requiring dialysis in severe cases.

"Therefore, maintaining a proactive approach to managing lupus is vital for a good quality of life."
