Thirteen truckloads of rice are to be cleared at the Elubo border weeks after importers refused to pay new duty tariffs which were more than twice the original amount.
The revenue authority was charging 25.2 dollars per bag instead of 10 dollars previously. The situation resulted in truckloads of rice being held up at the borders with some going bad.
The importers have since been given the clearance to import the rice but as a one-time-import transaction and at a 75 percent value for the 25 kilogram bag of rice.
Head of Public Affairs and Communications at the customs division of the GRA, Madam Annie Annipa, told Joy News the directive applies to only the first consignment of 13 truckloads.
