A subsidiary of the Social Enterprise Development Foundation of West Africa (SEND WEST AFRICA) in Ghana has urged government to resolve the infrastructure deficit in the education sector.
In a statement dated 1st December, 2022, SEND Ghana said although the government said in the 2022 budget that it was going to embark on the completion of some projects within the sector, no such projects were captured in the 2023 budget.
“Our analysis of the 2022 education sector budget revealed that some 5,403 schools were in critical condition with another 2,417 schools still under trees with GH₵3.5billion required to fix the sector’s infrastructural gap,” SEND Ghana revealed.
According to the statement, the amount allocated for the education sector's capital expenditure in the 2023 budget would not resolve the situation.
“Our analysis of the 2023 budget revealed that 2.76 billion was allocated to capital expenditure which constitutes only 12% of the total Education Ministry’s budget,” SEND Ghana noted.
The organization therefore recommended that government “must commit to increasing the allocation of funds for infrastructure development in the education to overcome the persistent deficit.”
Over the years, there have been media reports on many schools, especially in the villages, that remain under trees. This situation compels pupils to run home whenever the weather becomes unfavorable.
The situation has also resulted in poor attendance on the part of students.
