Residents of East Mamprusi are outraged after a seven-month pregnant woman was gang-raped by six armed men on the deteriorating Gambaga-Dagbriboari road in the North East Region.
The woman and her husband were ambushed while returning from a check-up in Nalerigu. The attackers brutally assaulted the woman, beat her husband, and stole their motorbike and phones.
According to JoyNews' correspondent Eliasu Tanko, the victim's grandfather reported that the pregnant woman suffered severe complications and had to be rushed back to the hospital the same night after the attack.
He stated that the couple was brutalised before their belongings were taken.
"The robbers were six in number and well-armed," the grandfather said.
He also said that many other residents of the community had fallen victim to similar attacks, losing their belongings to the assailants.
The grandfather attributed the increase in violent incidence to the poor state of the road and the government's chronic failure to address the issue.
“Years of neglect of our roads have caused us a lot of calamity and sometimes we asked ourselves if we were also part of Ghana,” he lamented.
For cultural and personal security reasons, JoyNews could not interview the victim directly, but off-camera, she expressed a prayer for her recovery and appealed for the immediate repair of the roads.
Meanwhile, there has been no action from the police, and no arrests have been made.
According to the residents, the police have not visited the community since the incident occurred, despite the fact that the attack was reported to the authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.
Speaking to JoyNews on Tuesday, August 20, the MP for Nalerigu, Issifu Seidu, expressed concern over the security situation in his constituency.
He noted that such incidents occur due to the poor condition of the roads and that, to mitigate these activities, he has arranged for construction equipment to reshape the roads.
“As a Member of Parliament, I have a voice on the floor of Parliament. I think what I have to do is to make a statement on the floor of Parliament so that we can get the Interior Minister to come in and respond to some practical steps they have taken to mitigate the situation,” he said.
