The family of the celebrated waakye seller, Auntie Imoro Muniratu popularly known as Auntie Muni, has confirmed her passing.
The 72-year-old known for her delectable waakye, succumbed to a short illness at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra on Wednesday, January 3.
Alhassan Abdul Arafat, Auntie Muni's son, disclosed this during an interview.
He revealed that his mother had been unwell and was initially taken to the SSNIT Hospital.
However, complications arose, prompting Auntie Muni to request discharge.
"After two days, we realised she was still not feeling well, so we rushed her to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for medical attention, and this morning at 3 am, she passed away," Arafat said.
He said prayers will be offered for her at the Cantonment mosque after which the body will be flown to Tamale for the burial.
Abdul Arafat said, "It is when the elders sit after the burial that we will decide when the funeral will be held."
The passing of Auntie Muni, a beloved figure in the culinary scene, has left many in mourning.
Her waakye stand was a cherished spot for both locals and visitors, known not only for its delicious offerings but also for the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by Auntie Muni herself.
As the news spreads, tributes are pouring in, reflecting the impact Auntie Muni had on the community. The family has disclosed that the funeral and burial will take place in Tamale, honouring her memory and legacy.
