The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) James Klutse-Avedzi has cautioned government to have a second look at the purpose of establishing the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund).
He said the aspect of funding structures meant for education at the tertiary level has been neglected for a long time and only the heads of such institutions are being blamed for neglecting educational projects while funds are not being released to complete projects.
Mr Klutse-Avedzi said this during the sitting of the Committee's Zonal Public hearing in Tamale to consider the 2021 Auditor-General’s Report on all Technical Universities and all Colleges of Education in the Northern, Savannah, North East, Upper East, and Upper West Regions cited in the Report.
Some of the Schools and Educational Colleges that appeared before the Committee included Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University, Tamale Technical University, and Bolgatanga Technical University.
The rest were Nursing Training College, Nusrat Johan Ahmadiyya College of Education, St. John Bosco College of Education, McCoy College of Education, E.P. College of Education, and Presby NTC at Bawku.
Some members of the Committee including Nelson Kwame Etse Dafeamekpor and Bawah Muhammad Briamah were not impressed about the many financial irregularities cited against Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University at Wa in the Upper West Region.
The management of the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University including the Director of Finance were advised to take a serious look at their payroll systems which seems to have a lot of weakness as cited in the Auditor-General’s Report.
The Committee is expected to sit in Tamale from Monday 28th August to Friday, September 1, 2023, before moving to the Western North for the Zone 2 Public Hearing.
