The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) says it will maintain security at the Agbogbloshie market to ensure no trader returns to the enclave following their relocation yesterday.
The traders were finally moved following a two decade struggle to relocate them to Adjen Kotoku.
The decongestion of the market is part of the minister’s ‘Accra Must Work Campaign’.
Regional Minister, Henry Quartey who also chairs the council tells JoyNews there was initial resistance,
But he is impressed that the traders are adhering to the directive.
“You know when I started this everybody thought it cannot happen, but read my lips nobody is going to come back here it is done, nobody when they come back 10 times, we will move them 100 times. It’s not going to happen anymore,” he said.
The onion traders on Thursday vacated the Agbobloshie Market to Adjen Kotoku market square after 20 years of plying their trade, forming part of a decongestion exercise spearheaded by Greater Accra Minister, Henry Quartey.
This comes after several weeks of negotiations between the Ministry and stakeholders in the value chain.
Following the movement of about 3,000 traders to the site, Mr Quartey has commended traders who began adhering to the directive to move even before the July 1 deadline.
He also encouraged the onion traders to get “onboard to ensure that we make the very place that we work, the very place that we make earns meat an enabling environment so that we can leave a legacy.”
