Reconciliation at last

The Osu Divisional Council would on Saturday 11 August, hold a ceremony at Osu Dadebunaa to confirm the cancellation of a long standing oath made by Osu Alata Asafo. A statement signed by Nii Okwei Nortey, Osu Stool Secretary noted that the oath came about as a result of the bitterness felt by the Alata Asafo against the Kinkawe Asafo. This led to skirmishes between Kinkawe and the Alata Asafoi, and had since the late forties not performed ceremonies nor lived together as one people. The statement said the traditional ways of communicating by the Four Quarters of Osu broke down in the late forties, ushering in a period of mistrust leading to outright misunderstanding. It said in 1956 a matter of inadequate communication by the Asafo of Kinkawe to the Asafo of Alata about movements in their jurisdiction, which the Kinkawe Asafo intended making, brought a challenge by the Alata Asafo, which resulted in gunshots. "There were casualties on both sides and we need to acknowledge this blemish, on the soil of Osu", adding that a number of Alata stalwarts were imprisoned which led to the impoverishment of their families and in some cases the children lost the opportunity for formal education.
