Thirty-two children drawn from Wume, near Sogakope have received treatment for various eye ailments at the Sogakope Comboni Hospital.
A visiting Italian medical group sponsored by the Rotary Club in conjunction with the Comboni Hospital treated patients mostly children who were identified by the combined efforts of former President Rawlings and Messrs Edmund Akor and Konu, Unit Chairmen for the NDC at Wume.
The Administrator of the hospital, Godwin Katsriku said the former President and Member of Parliament Kobe Woyome, having noticed that several children in the Wume area were suffering from eye ailments worked with the Unit Chairmen to mobilise and send them to the hospital for treatment using his own vehicle over a three-day period.
Mr. Katstriku said the Italian doctors treated a total 367 patients drawn from Accra, Tema, Ho, Akatsi, Anlo, Keta and other towns and villages within the South Tongu area.
“We publicised the visit of the Italian doctors prior to their arrival and that drew the attention of the people, including former President Rawlings who has long shown interest in our activities,” Mr. Katsriku said.
The Hospital Administrator noted that ailments treated included cataract, glaucoma, and teragium. He said the patients from Wume had undergone laboratory tests to determine the root cause of their ailments so preventive measures can be taken. “They have received preliminary treatment but once the laboratory results are in the specific cause of their infections can be determined.”
