The assemblyman of the Kwabrafoso East Electoral Area has been remanded by the police in Obuasi for allegedly sexually abusing a primary three girl of Tutuka Methodist School.
John Bright Mensah, popularly known as John B, was remanded into custody after appearing before a judge at the Obuasi Circuit Court yesterday.
He was charged with two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a 12-year-old pupil.
The Circuit Court judge, Gilbert Ayisi Addo, remanded him into police custody to re-appear on December 14, 2011 following a plea for more time by Inspector Emmanuel Osei Kumi, prosecutor of the case.
John B, an operator of the information centre in Obuasi, was arrested on Thursday afternoon after he surrendered to officers at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) while in the company of his colleague assembly members.
He is alleged to have sexually assaulted the young girl in his room on the afternoon of November 17 and 18 at Kwabrafoso, a suburb of Obuasi.
The incident happened when the victim brought him iced sachet water she was sent to buy.
The girl was rendered incapable of walking following the alleged sexual abuse.
She has since been operated upon at her pelvic area by medical officers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
Before the surgery, the 12-year-old victim was groaning in pain as a result of a bone fracture sustained during the abuse.
DSP Sophia Eva Ennim, Obuasi DOVVSU Unit Commander, said the girl was transferred from AGA hospital to KATH after her pain became severe.
According to the police officer, the victim failed to disclose her ordeal to the mother because the accused person, John Bright Mensah, warned her she would die if she did.
Mother of the victim however detected that her daughter had been sexually abused after the girl began limping.
