Director of Radio Tongu Mr. Bestway Zottor has allegedly been arrested for promoting a separatist agenda in the Volta Region.
His arrest comes after he was found culpable of promoting a separatist agenda initiated by the Homeland Study Group Foundation against warnings that all persons should desist from such activities.
Government cautioned Ghanaians to disregard an independence declaration for 'Western Togoland' by a Volta Region-based group Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF)
The group, HSGF announced the separation on their official social media handles on Saturday, November 16, after a group meeting was held in Ho, the Volta Regional capital.
“Today the 16th of November 2019, the leader of Western Togoland independence Mr. Charles Kormi Kudzodzi has announced the separation of Western Togoland from Ghana. He cited numerous reasons as the bases for which the union that was not established must not be recognized. More information will soon reach the General public soon,” they wrote on Facebook.
A statement from the Information Ministry however also said: “state security agencies were taking the necessary measures to ensure that persons involved with the illegal act are dealt with in accordance with the law.”
“Ghana remains a sovereign state which has not ceded any part of its territory to any person or group of persons,” the statement said.
The caution was intensified by Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa who issued further warnings to all media houses in the region especially Radio Tongu to desist from championing separatist Agenda or risk being held answerable to offences of successions.
Mr Tongu, however, did not heed to the warning.
He was arrested after he was found guilty of being the voice behind some recordings on social media, which sought to incite public violence and discussions seeking to compromise national security, after a District Security Council (DISEC) meeting was held.
The Ghana News Agenda Reports that he was picked up in his home by a joint security operation of personnel from the Bureau for National Investigations, the Military and the Police.
Public Relations Officer of the Volta Region Police Command Prince Dogbatse said Mr. Zottor was in police custody assisting with investigations.
