Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah has urged President Akufo-Addo to put measures in place to ensure the safety of journalists in the country.

She made this call to government in an interview on JoyNew's Midday News on Friday.

“I am calling on the President as a Human Rights Lawyer to speak up and make sure he protects our vulnerable journalists. It is bad news for Ada,” she said.

Her concerns come after a community radio station, Radio Ada was attacked by thugs on Thursday January 13, 2022.

According to reports, some thugs, numbering about 10, destroyed equipment and furniture in some of the station’s offices and manhandled two staff members over content aired on one of the station’s programmes, 'Manor Munyu'.

“The attackers, one of whom was armed with a pistol, invaded the on-air studio by forcibly destroying its door. They beat up the presenter and vandalised the on-air studio equipment, leading to the temporary shut-down of Radio Ada,” the Management of the station added in a press statement.

Reacting to this, she condemned the attack on the community radio station.

“Now people living in Ada live in fear because, how can macho men come to the station, vandalise the poor woman who is a receptionist there, they twisted her hand. Now the woman cannot do anything. Those working there, they beat them, what at all have they done, what is their crime?” she quizzed.

Mrs. Cudjoe-Ghansah sympathized with the Management and staff of Radio Ada as well as journalists who have been attacked in their line of work.

According to her, “it is a pity as a nation that we are not able to protect our journalists. Even though journalists go out of line sometimes, it is the duty of the nation to protect them."

The MP also noted that since the inception of the radio station in 1992, there has not been an incident of attack. She therefore charged government to ensure that journalists feel secured in the country.
