Queenmothers in the Mankessim and Enyanbaasa traditional areas have embarked on a month-long education campaign on the redenomination of the cedi in parts of the Central Region.
The campaign is being sponsored by the Mankessim-Enyanbaasa Development Association, a local NGO based in Cape Coast.
Speaking at an educational forum held for market women at Adisadel, a suburb of Cape Coast, Nana Ama Amissah I, Queenmother of Mankessim traditional area said the queenmothers have decided to join in the campaign because according to her “time was running out” and most people still did not know much about the exercise.
Nana Amissah, who is also the secretary of the association said, they have already educated market women in Mankessim and Enyanbaasa and would extend it to other parts of the region before July 1, adding that they would also visit churches, mosques and other public gatherings to educate the public.
She took the opportunity to explain the conversion of the old to the new currency to the women and cautioned them against rushing to change the old currency to the new one, stressing that they should rather use them along the new Ghana cedi until it finally fades out.
Nana Amissah also advised them not to deface, burn or throw away the old notes when the new one comes into circulation but send them to the nearest bank to be changed.
She warned against the possibility of people posing as bank officials to deceive them to change money for them, stressing that there was no one except the banks that could change the money for individuals and institutions and urged them to check their balance at the banks before the new currency come to circulation.
Nana Amissah advised them to handle the new notes with care and pay attention to the various advertisements in the media to enable them to understand the education campaign.
She underscored the importance of the redenomination of the cedi and said it would, among others, help people to avoid carrying large sums of money which has the potential of attracting armed robbers.
