Quartey wants to revive amateur boxing

Former world champion Ike Quartey has requested for a role at the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association to improve the fortunes of the sport. Quartey has been quiet on the sport since his defeat to former undisputed light middleweight champion Ronald Winky Wright in 2006. The former WBA Welterweight titlist wants to revive amateur boxing in the country to produce more credible pugilists for world titles. "Personally I want to be a member of the amateur because believe me if you want to get boxers like DK Poison, Azumah Nelson and myself, they have to go back to amateur; that's where we came from," The 39-year-old told Joy Sports Nathaniel Attoh. "To get good boxers like we they have to go and that is where I want to start from if they want me to be in Ghana boxing. Quartey represented Ghana at the 1988 Seoul Olympics as a light welterweight and rattled a record of 50 fights and four defeats. "With amateur you are now bringing them and so with the experience you have, you give it to them. That's where all the champions come from," he added. "We all come from the Olympics and we pass through the mill. We went to the African Games in Nairobi; I went to the Olympics and all the good fighters come from the Olympics. So I think If you start from amateur, it will be better." Story by Ridwan Ibrahim Asante/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
