A Senior Research Fellow at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Dr Kofi Bonney has stated that a Covid-19 negative PCR certificate and one-time testing at the country’s main airport is not enough justification to allow travelers from high-risk countries, entry into Ghana.
He said even if travelers from such countries test negative, it is vital to have them quarantined for a number of days for further testing before being allowed to join the population.
“People coming from all risk areas, I think it’s not enough for them to submit PCR negative certificate and do an antigen test at the airport, which is negative, then we allow them to come in to mix up with the rest of us.
“I think that they need to be held in quarantine for some time,” he said on JoyNews.
His concerns come as health officials try to stop further spread of the deadly Delta variant of Covid-19, which has been contracted by 134 students and a staff of the Achimota School.
Dr Bonney advised Ghanaians to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols. He warned of dire consequences for the seeming disregard for the safety measures.
“We are dealing with a virus that has an incubation period, a period where we have the virus proliferating in the human system. So, if you show up as negative, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are negative for the period of time the virus will be around,” he said.
JoyNews’ Judith Awortwi Tandoh reported that teachers of Achimota School, where the Delta strain has been recorded are undergoing Covid-19 testing.
Meanwhile, some parents of students of the school are pleading with the authorities to allow their wards, who have not been infected, to return home until there is assurance that the virus is no longer prevalent in the school.
