The Deputy Attorney General, Mr Kwame Osei Prempeh has said he supports calls for public officials to disclose their assets openly.
He said he will also support a proposed review of the current assets declaration and disqualification act.
The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is campaigning for a review of the law to allow for public disclosure of assets. CDD-Ghana believes it will help in the fight against corruption.
Contributing to a discussion on the effectiveness and challenges of the current Act on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Mr. Osei-Prempeh said many public officers have not complied with the law.
He said: “Everybody is interested when we are assuming office to declare our assets but when we are going it seems that nobody cares as to what happens. The law says at the end of every four years…everybody not only politicians, even the civil servants if they are still in office should declare their assets and comply with the law.”
Proponents of the review argue that spouses and close relatives of public office holders should also be made to publicly declare their assets to forestall transfers of looted public funds to them.
But Mr. Prempeh said that will be cumbersome.
“It means that if I take office, everybody in that category must declare their assets…Do we grab our nephews, nieces, wives and aunties all to declare their assets? I believe that is not practicable,” he stated.
Anti-corruption campaigner, Mr Daniel Batidam said the issue of public declaration of assets should be made a campaign issue.
He said public officeholders are having a field day because people are not critical of how they acquire their wealth.
