Mr Joseph Dumfeh, Chairman of the Atwima Mponua District Fire Volunteers Association, has predicted that this year’s dry season would be longer and severe.
He has therefore advised farmers, hunters, smokers and other fire users to be more careful in the use of naked fire, which could cause bush fires, resulting in the destruction of farm lands, foodstuffs and the environment.
Mr Dumfeh gave the advice at an educational forum organised by the Association at Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District for farmers, hunters and the public at the weekend.
The forum, aimed at enlightening them on the effects of bush fires, also touched on the need to take precautionary measures when using fire.
He said the Association has planned series of programmes for the communities in the district to educate them on bush fires.
Mr Dumfeh advised farmers and hunters to prepare their food at home before going to their farms, adding that they should also seek the assistance of Fire Volunteer Squads in their respective areas, when burning on the farms.
He urged them not to pollute rivers that serve as sources of drinking water with insecticides and other chemicals.
The Chairman hinted that the Atwima Mponua District Assembly by-laws was against the destruction of farm lands and environment by bush fires and warned that those who flout such laws would be punished.
