In March 2022, Dr. Hazel Berrard Amuah was appointed CEO of Prudential Life Ghana (PLIG). In that time PLIG has made commendable strides in not only improving its commercial orientation, but also its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentials.
Two years after being appointed CEO, Dr. Hazel reflects on Prudential Life Ghana (PLIG)’s ESG journey and shared in a conversation a few internal and external activities PLG has embarked upon in the fulfillment of their ESG mandate.
To making health and financial security advice available to Ghanaians, PLIG decided in a particular financial literacy month to partner with the Centre for Financial Literacy Africa to educate over 400 traders at the Madina Market on financial literacy and help them manage their money effectively to make better financial decisions.
In relation to stewarding the human impact of climate change, and as part of efforts to support the Government of Ghana’s agenda of planting 20 million trees across the country, PLIG in partnership with the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Ecofrontiers and Assemblies of God Church embarked on a tree planting exercise on one of the 2022 Green Ghana Days.
On June 10, 2022, an event was held at the Kasoa Market to educate the public on the importance of Tree Planting and sustaining the environment. In attendance were representatives from the Forestry Commission, 35 staff and agents of PLIG, students and some market women. Five thousand plants were distributed to several schools in Kasoa and Accra to mark the day.
A 2020 World Bank Report noted that an estimated 86% of Ghana's waste plastic load, is improperly disposed of resulting in plastics clogging up stormwater drains, rivers, and streams and ending up in the oceans. It is estimated that 250,000 metric tons of plastic waste are dumped from Ghana into the Atlantic Ocean Given the obvious menace that plastics pose to Ghanaian society, PLIG has in the last two years designed and deployed some plastic pollution mitigation schemes.
Under the auspices of a plastics recovery school project, Prudential Life Ghana in partnership with CSIR and AGI GRIPE embarked on a Plastics Recovery Project with eight senior high schools in Accra. An awards and exhibition event was held where students of Presbyterian Boys Secondary School, St. Mary's and Labone Senior High Schools were awarded for creating the most innovative items with collected plastics. They were the top-performing schools out of eight Senior High Schools namely, West African Senior School, St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, St. Mary’s Senior High School, Presbyterian Senior High School, Kinbu Senior High School, Accra Girls Senior High School, Labone Senior High School and Achimota Senior High School.
Innovative items made from plastics included hats, aprons, jars, decorative ornaments, and tissue boxes. Additional recycling bins were donated to further expand the recycling projects in the schools.
In 2024, Dr. Hazel Berrard Amuah avers that the PLIG sustainability journey remains fully on course, arguing that the evolution of the Prudential sustainability is in line with their mission to be the most trusted partner and protector for this generation and generations to come by providing simple and accessible financial and health solutions.
