Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor says political parties cannot provide face masks for electorates because of their branded nature.
According to Mr. Otokunor, the distribution of millions of face masks to electorates will also be a challenge due to lack of logistics.
His comment follows various allegations that some electorates were denied from participating in the special voting exercise without a facemask. According to sources, the voters were asked to come back only if they comply with the directive to wear a mask.
But Mr. Otokunor insists putting an instruction out that anyone without face masks, will not be allowed to vote, will breed disaster at the polling station.
“I cannot come to the polling station and you will tell me that because I don’t have a nose mask, I can't vote," he said.
The Deputy General Secretary who was speaking with JoyNews' Evans Mensah on PM Express, explained that political parties can not provide the masks because aside from being short on cash, the law of Ghana is against people arriving at a polling station with branded items.
"In cases where all a person has is a John Mahama or NPP nose mask, we will have a challenge in telling them that they can't wear that nose mask when you are demanding that they wear one.
"Because the Law says you must be in nose mask, it didn't say you can't be in NPP nose mask or NDC nose mask even though there is another law that says we can't carry such souvenirs to the polls."
Mr. Otokunor who doubles as the Deputy Campaign Manager for the party called on the Electoral Commission and government to make provisions at all polling stations for electorates to have access to unbranded face masks.
He stated that it was okay to wear an EC branded face mask and complimented the EC for being good at procuring them.
"They are good at procuring, just like how they came through during the voter registration," he added.
He used the platform to urge all electorates to vote for the NDC come December 7.
