Management of the Nsawam Medium Security prison is appealing to corporate organisations to support efforts that have been initiated in the highly congested prison to prevent an outbreak and possible spread of the coronavirus.
These measures include the creation of a temporal holding centre for fresh inmates who are brought on remand or to serve a jail term.
Management says this isolation centre sits in the same prison yard holding the inmates, hence putting people at risk.
In an interview with JoyNews' Latif Iddrisu at the medium-security prison, Public Relations officer of the prison, Amadu Abdul Latif said the ideal situation will be to have the holding centre stationed outside the prison walls to efficiently prevent the spread of the virus.
This according to him, can only be done with support from philanthropists and corporate organizations.
The public relations officer made the appeal when representatives from the University of Cape Coast led by Dr. Felix Kumadzro of the college of Distance Education donated food items and toiletries to inmates of the prison.
Dr. Felix Kumadzro said the donation forms part of the University's annual corporate social responsibility.
In his interview with JoyNews, Dr. Felix Kumadzro said the university was also chosen since it is one of the study centres of the university's distance education programme.
It currently holds some 56 students pursuing different diploma and degree programmes.
