A peaceful demonstration in Accra against the Electoral Commission’s plan to compile a new voters’ register almost turned chaotic after they breached police barricade at the Jubilee House, Tuesday.
The protesters convened at the Jubilee House, the seat of the Presidency, in their bid to petition President Nana Akufo-Addo over the EC’s decision.
During the demonstrations, members of the Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voters’ Register forced their way past a police barricade briefly, a situation that forced police to double up their efforts to prevent them.
Leaders of the protest, including bigwigs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), intervened to quell a possible clash between the agitated protesters and the police.
On behalf of the coalition, Chairman of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Bernard Mornah; NDC Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and NDC General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, presented the petition to the Jubilee House.
Minister of State at the Presidency, Kwaku Afriyie, received the petition on behalf of the President.
He promised to present the petition to the president.
The petition among other things urged the President to support the campaign to get the EC to back down on the ongoing process to compile a new voters’ register and acquire new devices for the December 7, 2020, general elections.
Today’s protest started at the Kawukudi park and ended at the headquarters of the EC.
While the coalition against the register argue that there is no need for a new electoral roll, the Commission insists the current register is not fit for purpose. The EC believes the new voters’ register with some enhanced security features will help to better ensure a smooth exercise on December 7. Follow the protests as it happened here.Latest Stories
