The rare privilege and opportunity to propose Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin amongst party members and for him to win is “one of my iconic achievements as Minority leader,” Haruna Iddrisu has said.
He told Evans Mensah on JoyNews' PM Express on Monday that "History at least will remember that I had the rare privilege and opportunity to propose him and by God’s grace he was accepted.
"It will go down in history and on record, like it or not that Haruna Iddrisu-one of my iconic achievement as Minority leader is to have produced a Speaker in Alban Bagdin," he said.
The Tamale South MP noted that the victory cannot be overemphasised given the time and situation the National Democratic Congress (NDC) found itself.
Mr Iddrisu also made reference to the 2020 Election Petition and the threat to prevent some party officials from voting citing the claim of dual citizenship and decision of independent MP for Fomena Constituency, Andrews Asiamah Amoako to join the NPP Caucus in Parliament to constitute the majority group as some challenges his side has surmounted.
According to him, people do not appreciate the dynamics in the Chamber that the Minority MPs were faced with and the hard work it required to make sure Mr Alban Bagbin won against former Speaker Mike Ocquaye.
The victory, he said, was eventually won after the NPP realised the party's resilience and integrity of Speaker Alban Bagbin.
"How did I get Bagbin elected...how did we as a minority caucus?...we were successful to the extent that there was corporation from the other side. Hail Haruna, praise Haruna he has gotten a Speaker elected from his side without the miracle of 137 plus...votes," he recounted.
He reiterated his confidence in Speaker Alban Bagbin to make the legislative arm of government accountable, responsive and transparent.
According to him, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is a man who is impartial and executes his duties neutrally.
