Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that government is almost done with a process that would ensure new born babies are issued the Ghana card.
According to him, work has already commenced to make the new arrangement effective this year with the Ghana Statistical Service providing the Ghana Health Service, 13 thousand tablets to support the project.
Speaking at the launch of the No Guarantor Student Loan Scheme in Kumasi on Wednesday, he said no one can function without the Ghana card, once the integration is done.
Government in 2018 launched an agenda to build a database economy with digitalisation as a major instrument for economic transformation.
Dr. Bawumia said work has already begun to integrate the Drivers’ License, Birth and Death Registry, Ghana Health Service, among others into the Ghana card system.
The idea, he noted, is to propel Ghana’s entry into 4th industrial revolution.
“We are linking the Birth and Death Registry to the Ghana Health Service and to the National Identification Authority.
When you are born, that is when you will get your Ghana Card number right from birth.
From birth, you will take the Ghana Card number to senior high school; basic school with it. It will track you all the way to the university.
So we have linked the National Identification with Ghana Health Services and the Birth and Death Registry.”
According to Dr. Bawumia, the integration will mean the Ghana card will officially become the basis of every economic activity in Ghana.
“Your Ghana Card number is going to be with you from birth until death. That is how we build an anchor of a data,” he said.
“We are almost complete with this exercise by the way and I am pushing them so that we start it this year. This is not futuristic matter. We are almost there with the integration that we are doing.
We are building a whole eco system around the Ghana Card and there’s no way you can function in this country if you don’t have Ghana Card.”
