Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has encouraged private schools to apply for financial assistance from the government under the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP).

This, he said, would allow them to afford teachers’ stipends as the institutions take a hit from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Beyond the Lockdown on Sunday, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said factors that could influence their benefitting from the fund is their compliance “when times were good.”

“If they were registered with local authorities, they were paying their taxes and complying with other regulation…” the government spokesperson told the host Emefa Apawu.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah was responding to queries on whether teachers with private institutions are eligible for the benefit from the CAP.

The Minister explained “the government is not giving pay checks to private individuals.”

He explained the schools in which such teachers tutor are businesses and can apply for the loan which would then be used to the benefit of its employees.
