Two inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, accused of sodomy and subjected to severe punishment by prison officers, have ended up at the Nsawam Government Hospital.
The two, whose names were given as Razak Lartey and Zangoro Abdallah, were allegedly caught on Tuesday in the act and a prison officer on duty ordered some inmates to mix cement and salt which was smeared around their penis, testicles and anus as a form of punishment.
This resulted in severe burns to the parts of their body and they had to be rushed to the hospital.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to the Ghanaian Times on condition of anonymity after the two were accused of the act, an officer ordered the instant punishment to be meted out to the inmates.
When quizzed, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Prison Service, Mr Courage Atsem, confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times.
“It was the inmates who meted out the instant punishment to their colleagues by smearing ashes on their bodies,” he said.
Mr Atsem said the Regional Commander had set up a committee to probe the incident so that such a situation might not occur again in the future.
However, a source at the Nsawam Government Hospital confirmed that the inmates suffered severe bums from a mixture of salt and gunpowder which was smeared on their private parts and bodies.
The source said they were admitted at the hospital, complaining of severe burns on their bodies saying, “One of the victims has since been treated and discharged whiles the other is still on admission.
It said one of the victims denied that they were engaged in sodomy and insisted they were framed up after they refused to allow another inmate to use their mobile phone when he accosted them at their hideout.
According to the victims, the inmate raised the alarm and allegedly lied they were engaged in sodomy which led to the instant punishment.
