Preview: Ghana vrs Serbia

Serbia’s Milos Krasic says the Eastern European team will top Group D ahead of Germany, and not only that; they will play US in the round of 16. That sounds ambitious if not disrespectful and I say he will be in for a big surprise. Serbia play Ghana in the opening Group D game at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium; a match where victory is non-negotiable for any of the side. Krasic is counting on a water-tight defence marshaled around Manchester United Nemanja Vidic, Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Neven Subotic to keep the Ghanaian attack and by inference the attacks of the two other group members ( Germany and Australia) at bay. Playing a Ghanaian side which has proven shy in front of goal; and a relatively leaky Black Stars defence, Krasic perhaps may be justified in brushing aside any threat the Black Stars could pose. Connoisseurs both in Ghana and around the world are running their mouths already, trumpeting the tactical and technical superiority of the Serbs, giving the Stars no dogs chance at all to cause an upset. But I dare say there will be an upset. And I bank my hopes not too much on experience-even though it is important, but on attitude and character of a team ready to take the world by storm. The 4-1 annihilation of the Stars by the Netherlands is regrettable but that is just the tonic needed to whip up the adrenalin. I look back at the Stars four years ago when Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari were on top of their game and the Ghana midfield was touted to have had perhaps the best midfield in the last World Cup in Germany. Essien is out and whilst Muntari and Appiah are still around, they are said to be struggling for form. But I look at the strengths and potential this team possesses and I am under no illusion the team will perform and 'doubting thomases' will begin to come around. The Ghana midfield does not lack quality. Kwodwo Asamoah, Anthony Annan and Prince Kevin Boateng/Derek Boateng will offer a sweet combination for the connoisseurs to rewrite their scripts. The bench is solid with replacements good as those in the starting line up. Far from amateur performance put up by Asamoah Gyan in Germany, the Rennes star has garnered so much confidence and has looked far more promising in front of goal than he was four years ago. Coach Milovan Rajevac promised after Angola 2010 to combine experience and youthful exuberance for the Black Stars and that will do the trick. The Serbians in spite of all the accolades are a beatable side. The Whites of New Zealand have shown that. If I were Milos Krasic I will look back at the last few friendlies and say to myself all is not rosy as many would have the world believe about the Serbs. But it is all good. There is psychology in football and that is the button he is pushing. By the end of Serbia match, the world will see a new Messi in Kwodwo Asamoah, an outstanding Dunga in Anthony Annan. As for Asamoah Gyan, a new found world class striker is just about to be discovered. Preview by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com
