The Coalition of Democratic Forces on Wednesday called on President Evans Atta Mills to stem the increasing state of insecurity and ensure that the protection of civil and human liberties was not compromised.
Addressing a news conference in Accra, spokesperson of the group, Ibrahim Adjei charged government to demonstrate that all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliations could truly enjoy freedom, justice and security under his administration.
He said since the inception of the new administration, Ghanaians had been subjected to dehumanizing incidents citing the brutalities that had engulfed the Tamale township since January 19 leaving a series of violence, arson and murder.
The brutalities, he said, included the killings of Rashid Harun and two others in Bawku, burning of several vehicles as well as the attacks on perceived political opponents at Agbogbloshie and Kokomba markets in Accra resulting in the death of one and several injuries.
Mr. Adjei said even though official reports had been made to the police, no effective action had been taken.
He noted that over the weekend, violence again erupted in Bawku amidst accusations that leading political figures were hiding behind the long standing chieftaincy and tribal problems to create chaos and anarchy.
“Ghanaians are horrified, shocked and feel very insecure. When will the wanton destruction of property and loss of lives stop?” Mr. Adjei wondered.
He said contrary to the assertion by the President during the State of the Nation Address that the private sector would be given the necessary boost and support, the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in some parts of the country, had subjected businessmen to undue harassment and intimidation without a just cause.
The spokesperson said the private sector that the previous government nurtured appears to be under serious threat by operative of the new administration.
