The Presidential Press Secretary, Andrew Awuni has described as “false and treasonable”, a report by the Ghana Palaver that sought to suggest that the President is conniving with the security agency to undermine the forthcoming general elections.
Mr. Awuni in a press statement said President J.A Kufuor has ordered the National Security to investigate the matter and get to the bottom of it.
“We are calling on the National Security to take up the matter, summon whoever is behind to get to the bottom of the story.”
He said often times, the presidency does treat such fabrications with contempt, but with this “lie and total fabrication …somebody has to answer”.
He said a session of the media have taken the leniency of the presidency to engage in spreading falsehood.
According to the Ghana Palaver, The President had met with service commanders, in an attempt to influence them to announce a state of emergency during the 2008 elections to facilitate the New Patriotic Party’s victory.
The features editor of the palaver Ametor Kwame in an interview with Dzifa Bampoe on Friday said they stand by their story.
He however admitted committing an error citing Major General Ayiku as part of the meeting.
Reports say the Major General passed away in 2007.
Lawyer and one time Presidential Candidate of the Convention People's Peoples Party Mr. Bright Akwete in a reaction admitted the story was in bad taste, but refrained from calling it a treasonable offence.
He said the criminal libel law under which this reportage could be defined as treasonable had been repealed by the kufuor administration.
The case would have to be referred to the National Media Commission for redress. He added.
