Accra-based Power FM presenter, Oheneba Boamah has been cautioned with offensive conduct and publication of false news by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service.
The CID department in a statement accused the broadcaster of hurling scathing insults at and issuing threats to President Akufo-Addo.
Some members of the National Democratic Congress picketed at the CID headquarters earlier in the day demanding his release from police custody.
Lawyer for the presenter, Kojogah Adawudu, speaking to Emefa Apawu on Joy FM’s News Night said his client is still in police custody.
According to him, upon honouring an invitation from the CID, his client was subjected to several questioning by the police concerning some statements he had made on Power FM during the 2020 Elections.
The police were however unable to tell them which of his statements were false and what conduct of his was offensive.
“My client is being investigated under the Provision of Section 207 for offensive conduct and also section 208 for publication of false news. Concerning what news is false, we are yet to know the news that is false, and then what conduct amounts to offensive conduct we are yet to be told,” he said, Monday.
He stated that a video shown them by the police of his client only showed his client commenting on the violence that ensued following the casting of ballots.
“He’s expressing a view, his sentiments about what happened during this election," the lawyer stated.
According to him, an additional audio was played to which Oheneba Boamah denied having any knowledge of.
He exercised his right to silence according to his lawyer and was later asked to write a statement.
Lawyer Adawudu stated that after several hours of waiting at the CID office without any clear instructions from the police, Oheneba Boamah was whisked away to the Central Police Station where he believes his client currently is.
“They refused to tell us where they were taking him. Until when it became so heated that they said they’re going to Central. So our belief is that he’s gone to Central and my colleague the MP-elect for Madina, Sosu, has gone to Central and he says he’s at the Striking force. So he’s being detained there,” he said.
According to the lawyer, should his client not be released after 48 hours, he will take the matter to court.
“We will go and ask for the bail. The police has the right to give us bail within 48 hours. If they refuse and deny him, after 48 hours we will go to court and ask that he should be granted bail. They cannot keep him after 48 hours.”
Speaking to the Public Relations Officer for the Police CID, DSP Julia Obeng she confirmed that indeed the presenter had been invited to the Police CID headquarters for questioning, was cautioned and later arrested to assist in further investigations.
However she refused to speak concerning his exact whereabouts and reasons for his detainment, citing national security concerns for the secrecy.
Meanwhile, Oheneba Boamah is doing fine, according to DSP Julia Obeng.
