A major pipeline supplying treated water to Western Accra Wednesday burst into a high rise fountain at Awoshie, a suburb of Accra, gushing water into nearby homes.
The pipe burst which rose to about 50 metres high, occurred at about 6:30am. It was not immediately known what may have caused the burst, however a garage located some 60 metres away suffered the most as the water rushed into the compound and filled parked cars being repaired or waiting to be attended to.
It took staff of the Ghana Water Company several hours to respond to calls by residents drawing attention to the incident and the danger it posed to nearby houses. According to Mr Kofi Ackom, proprietor of the garage, he made frantic SOS calls to the offices of the GWCL, the police headquarters and media houses but no one responded.
Apart from the garage, the water also found its way into three other homes.
The scene attracted a good number of spectators which also led to a heavy traffic jam on the Kwashieman - Mallam high way.
