Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, says Ghana’s post-HIPC performance gives a strong indication that, the government’s ambitious 'Ghana-Beyond Aid' agenda is possible
He says it provides an assurance that Ghana has what it takes to break the mould of dependency and donor support.
“It tells you that we have what it takes to break the mould of dependency and achieve the goal our leaders have set for us.”
Asantehene said Ghana’s 60-year history as an independent sovereign nation, is fraught with painful scars due to the failure to properly manage her resources.
“We bear the scars of armed intervention, and we bear the scars of HIPC, a humbling acknowledgement of the depths of failure,” he said.
The Otumfuo wants Ghanaians who are sceptical about the country's future to take a recap of Ghana's post-HIPC era to regain the necessary hope.
"There must be many well-meaning Ghanaians who worry whether we may not be biting more than we can chew," the Asantehene was addressing investors at the Executive Dinner Ball on Sunday.
He continued: "I urge you to take a sober look at the country’s performance post-HIPIC and you must find all the assurance you need about our future. Ghana went from HIPC to the status of a middle-income country in less than a decade. This does not happen."
He says though the economy may not have performed to the optimum of expectations of many, it has remained relatively resilient.
“We have what it takes to break the mould of dependency and achieve the goal our leaders have set for us.”
The Executive Dinner Ball was under the theme, “Ghana, a promising investment destination in Africa”.
It was part of the World Meet in Ghana Investors Forum.
It forms part of activities to mark the 20 years ascension of the Asantehene on the Golden Stool.
The Asantehene assured the international business community that the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ policy introduced by President Akufo-Addo, is beyond political conflict and urged the world to buy into it without fear.
