Team news, manager quotes, match facts and odds for the Champions League quarter-final between FC Porto and Bayern Munich.

BACKGROUND

Bayern Munich may be missing some of their biggest names when they travel to Porto for the first leg of their Champions League last eight on Wednesday but the Germans are confident they have enough firepower to defend their favourites tag.

Chasing a second treble after 2013, Bayern will be without Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger among others but they know their season will not be a success if they do not advance in the Champions League. Bayern left a day earlier than usual, arriving in the Portuguese city on Monday for Wednesday's game as coach Pep Guardiola shifts the focus away from injuries to their dominant domestic season.

Porto beat them in a memorable European Cup final in 1987 -- their only win in five matches against Bayern.

But the only thing on the Germans' mind is taking an advantage back to Munich for the return leg and then qualify as they did on two previous occasions against Porto in the quarter-finals.

Five-time winners Bayern are looking for a fourth successive semi-final appearance but will also be without injured defenders David Alaba and Medhi Benatia.

Coach Guardiola, however, will have central defender Jerome Boateng, rested in Saturday's 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, back in the squad.

Porto, looking for their first semi-final appearance since winning the trophy in 2004, also enjoyed a successful dress rehearsal, beating Rio Ave 3-1 on Saturday.

Winger Ricardo Quaresma was again on target for them taking his tally to three goals in two matches. The two-times European champions are also in the running for more than just one title this season, three points off leaders Benfica ahead of the derby in two weeks.

TEAM NEWS

Maracano is suspended for Porto. Cristian Tello and Jackson Martinez are rated as doubtful to start the match.

The Bavarians, chasing three titles this season, are without Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Alaba, amongst others, for the quarter-final first leg in Portugal, but Philipp Lahm is back for Bayern.

MANAGER QUOTES

Pep Guardiola: "I am surprised with their level and we will need two good games to reach the semi-finals. They play an open game ... they have physical midfielders but with great quality. That is also their biggest asset. Their individual quality."

Guardiola added there was no point talking about the Bayern injuries, saying he would simply try his best with the players at his disposal.

"The last two weeks we talked about this a lot but we have this situation and we are here with these 14 players and we will try our best. That's what it is and I won't complain."

Julen Lopetegui: "Ambition and imagination are two words we have in mind. I'd like to remind everyone that we didn't win a ticket to this competition - we had to earn it through the play-offs. We are here, proud and happy to be playing among the best teams in Europe at this stage of the Champions League. We want to be the best performers tomorrow while maintaining respect for our opponents.

We are talking about one of the best Bayern sides in the club's history. Bayern have injuries but will still have seven or eight world champions on the pitch. We don't care about the players they don't have. We have to focus on the ones that will play."

PLAYER QUOTES

Thomas Mueller: "For the (recent) games against Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen we had two matches where we played with a decimated squad and with few options. In those games we came closer together as a group, as a unit, and that will obviously help us against Porto. Now it is not about the injuries but about building a strong unit on the pitch with the players who are there. We are confident and hopefully we can score a few goals."

MATCH FACTS

These two teams have already met twice in the quarterfinals of the European Cup/Champions League, with FC Bayern München progressing in both occasions (1990/91 and 1999/00).

Porto will play the European Cup/Champions League quarterfinal for the seventh time in their history: the Portuguese have made it through the semis only twice so far (1986/87 against Brøndby and 2003/04 against Lyon), going on to win the trophy both year though.

Porto are unbeaten in nine consecutive European home games, winning six of the last seven matches played on their soil.

However, Bayern have lost only two of their last 15 games in European competitions on the road (W10, D3), and failed to find the net only twice in the last 18 away matches.

The German side will play their 26th quarterfinal in this competition: they have progressed 16 times so far, including the last four times they have reached this stage.

FC Bayern München have conceded only two goals in the last six games played at this round of the competition, keeping four clean sheets in the process and averaging two goals per game in the process.

Bayern have fired the most shots (153, incl. blocked) and the joint-most shots on target (62) in this Champions League term among the eight teams still in the race.

On the other hand, Porto are the team (among the eight left) to have faced the fewest shots so far, 50.

Porto and Bayern are two of the three teams to have ever managed 4+ goals from outside the box in a Champions League game since 2002/03 (the third one being Man Utd): the Germans did it against Lille in 2012, while the Portuguese did it against Basel last March.

Five of the last six goals scored by Porto have come from outside the box (including two direct free-kick), consequence of the highest shot conversion rate from outside the box (16%) among the eight teams still in the competition.

FC Bayern München have 10 different goalscorers in this Champions League season, more than any other team still in race.

Héctor Herrera has delivered four assists – no player has assisted more goals so far.

Yacine Brahimi is the only player to have netted two goals from a direct free-kick in the competition this season (against BATE Borisov and Basel).

Thomas Müller has scored five goals and delivered one assist in his last five Champions League appearances (including a brace against Shakhtar).
