Political parties warned not to use the youth

The Movement for Youth, Peace and Development (MYPD), a non-governmental organisation, on Friday expressed concern about the use of the youth as instruments of violence by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the December 28 runoff. A statement signed Mr Joseph Tetteh, Administrator of MYPD in Accra, pointed out to the youth that unlike many leaders of the country, they were yet to realise their ambition. It said: “It would therefore be in their (youth) interest to secure the future of the country by resisting attempts by political leaders to plunge the country into violence.” The Movement in expressing its worry over the turn of events after the Runoff, noted that the NPP and NDC continued to compromise the peace of the country for their parochial interest by adopting desperate and questionable measures to win political power. The statement reminded the leadership of the two political parties that prior to December polls, the popular demand of the people was peace and urged them to maintain that. It recalled that the Movement organised a series of peace programmes, including forums for aspiring legislators and the youth in the constituencies and peace walk from Kumasi to Accra led by Solomon Benjamin Asare, a youth patriot, who also advised the youth in the cities, towns and villages on non-violent conduct of the voting.
