Representatives of three political parties in Mfantsiman East Constituency on Wednesday, resolved to refrain from any acts that would result in conflict before, during and after Election 2008. At a day’s forum organized by Mfantsiman Municipal Directorate of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on the theme “Peaceful Election 2008” representatives of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) agreed that the nation needed peace to accelerate its socio-economic development. Mr Stephen Edward Moore, Mfantsiman East Constituency Chairman of the NDC, urged leadership of political parties to adhere to the messages of peace being preached, and refrained from instigating their activists and supporters to indulge in chaos. He advised supporters of the NDC to remain calm even in the face of provocation. Mr Kwadwo Aduamuah, CPP Youth Organizer, expressed concern about allegations that all political disturbances in the country were being caused by activists and supporters of NDC and NPP. He appealed to the Members of Council of State, the clergy, opinion leaders and chiefs to call the two parties and their supporters to order to ensure an incident free election. Mr Felix Antwi, NPP First Vice-Chairman, urged leadership of political parties in the constituency to educate their supporters to desist from defacing posters of their opponents to ensure peace among them. Mr Isaac Sam, Deputy Central Regional Director of NCCE, said since all political parties were in pursuit of national development, they should prevent any act that would bring disunity and conflicts. He said NCCE would continue to educate the citizenry on the need to maintain peace and forged ahead in unity for the country to achieve its desired vision and set goals. Ms Margaret-Mary Sackey, Mfantsiman Municipal Director of NCCE, said the fact that political parties had different ideologies, did not make them enemies and called on all the citizenry to unite “because the nation would forever remain while political parties could collapse”. She urged supporters of political parties to tolerate divergent views and endeavour to be at peace with all, adding, “We have one Ghana and nothing more.” Source: GNA
