Civil Society Group, Justice for Ghana, has entreated the Police to prioritise the interest of the country over that of any political party.
This comes after the police service secured a restraining order from a High Court in Accra to stop the group from picketing at the forecourt of Parliament House on Wednesday as planned.
In a statement commending the service for "their professionalism and efficiency" during the ”yentumi ahokyerɛ” demonstration to parliament carried on December 8, 2021, the group also lamented the fact that they were restricted from using their preferred route for the protest.
"Their show of friendship earned the highest respect during the walk from Efua Sutherland Park to Parliament. Whilst we salute them, we pulse to lament the bad faith exhibited in surreptitiously obtaining a Restraining Order to stop us from picketing at the forecourt of Parliament House.
"Aside from that, policing was at its professional best and we are really grateful for all their effort," they said.
Members of the group turned up in their numbers to protest against the e-levy that government intends to introduce in the coming year. It was in demand for a complete withdrawal of the e-Levy.
They were also protesting against the "general harsh economic environment in the country."
Prior to the protest, the group wrote to the police to notify them about their intention to embark on the demonstration but the Police secured an injunction to indefinitely prevent the group from picketing on or anywhere around Parliament.
Though the group successfully presented the petition to the House, they were obviously not happy about the order secured by the police.
Hence, they have urged the service to collaborate with citizens to strengthen the pillars of the country's democracy, further insisting that the E-Levy will squeeze the little life from all of Ghanaians.
"We can cooperate to strengthen the pillars of Democracy. We believe the Police Service should always work in the interest of Ghana and not for any political party or government.
"We look forward to a more fruitful and more cordial relationship in the future. Let us together struggle to liberate our country from economic strangulation and colonialism. Let us resist it together God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong," they added.
