Police have shot dead a suspected armed robber and arrested 22 others in Kpone a suburb of Tema in the Greater Accra Region in a raid on Monday.
The robbers numbering about 40 were said to have blocked the road, held hostage tourists and visitors returning to Accra from the Asafotufiam festival in Ada and took away all their belongings.
Tema Regional Police commander, ACP Augustine Gynae told Joy News’ Matilda Asante Asiedu a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene of the robbery after a tip-off to effect arrest, but on arrival the robbers turned their rage towards them, firing indiscriminately at the police forcing the police to fight back.
One of the robbers died on the spot and 13 others were nabbed. ACP Gynae said the police after reinforcement and surveillance arrested 9 others, bringing the total number to 22.
According to him, one of the robbers who escaped in handcuffs was nearly lynched by people within the vicinity, but was rescued by the police.
He is said to be in a critical condition at a hospital.
ACP Augustine Gynae said his outfit has mounted a thorough search for the over fourteen others who are at large.
He said the arrested suspects will be grilled thoroughly to provide adequate information which will lead to the arrest of the other before processing them to court.
