The Public Affairs Director of the Accra Regional Police Command, Kwaku Dompreh has dismissed allegations that Police at Adabraka in Accra assaulted some residents of the area.
Some residents of Adabraka had accused the police of physically assaulting them following a disagreement over who takes responsibility for an accident involving a school girl.
The girl was knocked down at a dysfunctional traffic light at Adabraka and eye witnesses said it could have been prevented if the police were there to control both human and vehicular traffic.
A crowd that gathered at the scene blamed the accident on what they said was the negligence of the police.
According to them the police officers numbering ten, took offence, pounced on one of the civilians and beat him up.
But in an interview with Joy News, Mr. Dompreh said the civilians rather physically and verbally assaulted the police officers including a chief inspector.
He said two of the civilians have been arrested and would be arraigned before court for assault.
Mr. Dompreh said the action is to serve as a deterrent to others who would desire to pursue such a course and said assault, be it physical or verbal, is an offence punishable by law.
