Police Wednesday night shot and killed an alleged armed robber on the Tema motorway.
The deceased and five others were alleged to be robbing passengers on a Tema-Accra Benz bus.
The group also robbed the driver, Daniel Kpogo, of his sales for the day as well as two mobile phones.
Superintendent Owusu Donkor of the National Highway Police Patrol, who led the exercise, said the robber died in an exchange of fire.
“[When] the robbers saw the patrol vehicle they opened fire, so the policemen returned fire but sensing danger they tried to flee; one of them was hit…and he was arrested. As I speak to you I suspect that he is dead,” Supt. Donkor told Joy News’ Sammy Darko.
The 25-kilometer motorway stretch has been the scene of several highway robberies, a situation which prompted increased patrols on the highway.
In March this year two women were allegedly robbed and raped by four young criminals on the Motorway at about 7.30pm when the victims had alighted from a commercial vehicle and were about to cross the dual carriageway to the Spintex Road.
The Accra-Tema Motorway is, arguably, one of the most impressive road networks in Africa constructed under the leadership of Ghana's first president, the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the 1960s.
The road was built to near Autobahn (Germany) proportions and it was supposed to be a benchmark for future highway construction in Ghana.
