Personnel from the Dansoman Divisional Police Command have impounded over 100 commercial vehicles that were caught breaching social distancing protocols.
Speaking to Joy News’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Divisional Police Commander, ACP Isaac Asante, said the move is a punitive measure and it is uncertain when the vehicles will be released to the owners.
Some drivers were spotted carrying more than one passenger which they say is contrary to the directives meted out.
“We are not going to take serious actions but we just want them to know that laws must work in the country. From here I will make a decision as to whether to release the cars to them or not,” he explained.
He stated that the drivers had to be warned against crowding at the police station when their vehicles were seized to ensure the practice of social distancing.
They lamented that commuters attempted to violate the regulations under the pretext of going to the bank or to buy medicine.
According to them, this made their work difficult and they had to force these passengers to alight and walk to their destinations.
ACP Asante pleaded with driver unions to ensure their members comply with the lockdown measures.
“The GPRTU must do us good by asking their drivers to run a shift. The drivers and Ghanaians are not respecting the law,” he stated.
They have, meanwhile, threatened to resort to the use of minimal force to compel drivers and commuters observe the partial lockdown in the coming days.
However, some of the affected drivers accused the police of bias and unprofessional conduct.
