The Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Bernard Deri, has dismissed allegations of intimidation and brutalities against residents of Tsiame of the Volta region.
Speaking to Joy News, he said the police would however use any means necessary to maintain the peace in the area
Some opinion leaders of the area had complained of increasing tension over a planned meeting of some chiefs in the region. The meeting was called by the Awadada of the Anlo Traditional Area.
The Chief of Tsiame, Togbui Shikabli, told Joy News a combined team of police and military personnel are intimidating his people. An opinion leader of Tsiame also accused the police of brutalising innocent people.
But DCOP Deri says the security personnel are in the area upon intelligence information that the conveners were planning to destabilise the area.
Joy News can confirm that the meeting went ahead as planned. A prominent citizen and lawyer, Chris Ackummey who was at the meeting, said the chiefs have given one of the royal gates, the Adzovia clan, the mandate to produce a chief for the Anlo state by the end of August 2008.
